Looking for a restaurant near the Reno Arch usually happens about five minutes before everyone gets hungry.
One person wants a cocktail. Someone has tickets to a show. Someone else has been walking around downtown since noon and would like to sit down immediately. The answer needs to be close, good and uncomplicated.
Café Whitney is inside Whitney Peak Hotel, a few steps from the Arch. We serve breakfast through dinner, with plenty of room in between for coffee, a long lunch or a drink that quietly becomes the rest of the evening.
Start Early
Downtown looks different before the signs light up.
Breakfast at Café Whitney is calm, comfortable and substantial enough for whatever the day has planned. Stop in for coffee and something simple during the week, or take your time with it.
Weekends belong to brunch. Chilaquiles, Eggs Benedict, French toast, the Monte Cristo and bottomless mimosas are all in play. Order for the table. Stay longer than expected. That is more or less the point.
Lunch keeps the same energy. It works for a meeting, a break from the office or a midday reset that does not feel like an obligation.
By Four, Things Get More Interesting
Happy hour runs from 4 to 6 pm, Sunday through Friday. It is an easy window for a cocktail before a show, a few plates after work or the opening round of a night downtown.
No moving the car. No coordinating a second location. No group text trying to determine where everyone should go next.
Stay for dinner and order according to the night. A burger and a cocktail. A few things for the table. A proper entrée and a bottle of wine. The menu is familiar enough to make sense on a Tuesday and interesting enough to bring someone from out of town.
Café Whitney is polished, but not precious about it. You can come in dressed for dinner or stop by because you happened to be downtown and liked the look of the place.
Keep the Rest of the Night Loose
Catch a show at Cargo. Walk beneath the Reno Arch. Head toward the river. Call it a night or keep going.
Downtown Reno does not need a complicated itinerary. It needs a good place to start, a table worth staying at and a drink before whatever comes next.
We can help with all three.
Café Whitney is located inside Whitney Peak Hotel at 255 N. Virginia Street in downtown Reno.
